Choose a Frying Pan From the Hob Base and Actual Meal
Compare cooking surface, handle and care before choosing a larger diameter.
We have not performed hands-on testing of the products discussed. Manufacturer references and official guidance support the documented information below; comparison exercises are our editorial guidance.
A frying pan's top diameter is not the same as the base that meets the hob or the flat surface available inside. Those differences can matter in a small kitchen. Start with the hob's instructions and an ordinary meal, then compare the exact pan rather than treating a larger number as an automatic upgrade.
Read hob suitability first
Identify the hob type and its cookware requirements. Read the selected pan's documented suitability, including any base-size guidance from the hob maker. Tefal's official cookware instructions explicitly direct readers to check hob compatibility for the actual cookware. A material description or an induction symbol on a similar product is not evidence for the selected variant. Do not improvise a heat-source arrangement because the pan appears to sit on it.
Measure the useful cooking area
List the foods normally prepared together and compare the pan's internal flat area where documented. A sloping side can make two pans with the same top diameter behave as different-sized work areas. This site has not tested heat distribution or cooking performance. Use the maker's loading and cooking guidance rather than estimating universal servings from diameter. Consider whether an existing appropriate pan used in a planned sequence already covers the meal.
Include handle and lid space
Measure overall length with the handle and any supplied lid. Check the cupboard, sink and hob surroundings, keeping controls and permitted movement clear. A removable handle is another component with explicit attachment and use instructions, not an assumption that any handle in the brand fits. Read oven-use restrictions for the complete pan, including handle, lid and knob. Do not transfer a temperature limit from a different model or from the main body material alone.
Choose a care process you will follow
Read the exact pan's utensil, heating, washing and storage guidance before purchase. A coating name does not remove those requirements or establish a lifespan. Compare the maintenance with your routine and avoid unverified claims about healthier cooking or permanent nonstick performance. Skip a new pan when the current suitable equipment serves the meals after correct care. If buying, keep the model and hob-fit record, verify the delivered size and retain the instructions so later use is based on the actual product.
Compare the trade-offs
| Option or check | Reason to choose | Reason to reconsider |
|---|---|---|
| Larger pan | Hob and ordinary meal both justify it | Top diameter can hide a smaller flat area. |
| Smaller suitable pan | The real quantity and hob fit are adequate | A large occasional meal may need another plan. |
| Removable handle format | Documented storage benefit is useful | Handle compatibility and attachment add checks. |
