An entrance mat must fit the doorway, its floor finish and the conditions at that location. A decorative rectangle can interfere with a door or move out of position if the backing and surface are unsuitable. Begin with indoor or outdoor placement, then measure the door's lowest clearance across its complete swing.

Read the intended placement and backing

IKEA publishes indoor-and-outdoor door mats with model-specific materials and care information, including OPLEV and LYNDERUP. Compare the exact product's stated placement with the entry. A sheltered indoor threshold and an exposed outdoor step are different conditions. Read floor-maker restrictions for backing materials, especially on sensitive finishes. Do not infer compatibility from a rubber-like appearance or a broad anti-slip description. This guide does not claim a mat prevents every slip or protects every floor under all weather conditions.

Measure door movement rather than a static gap

Check the minimum gap between the door and floor through its entire opening path, including any seal or sweep. Compare that with the mat's full thickness and edge profile. A mat fitting beneath the door when closed can still obstruct it farther into the room. Include the width of the entrance and the route used by shoes, mobility equipment or deliveries as relevant. Do not trim a mat unless the maker expressly permits it, since cutting may alter backing or edges.

Choose a cleanup process for the real dirt

Compare the surface texture with the ordinary entry conditions: dry dust, wet shoes or another supported use. Read how the mat is shaken, brushed, rinsed or washed and what must dry before replacement. A large mat can hold a different amount of debris but also needs a larger cleaning and drying location. Do not assume a material suitable outdoors can go in a washing machine. Check whether the mat's backing and floor need periodic inspection under the maker's guidance.

Buy a practical threshold arrangement

Use the actual floor plan to check that the mat lies in its supported position without folded edges or an obstructed walking route. A second mat can serve a separate permitted stage at an entrance, but should not create an overlapping layered edge. Buy when the placement, door clearance and care routine match the entry. Skip a thick oversized mat if the door cannot operate normally, or keep a compatible existing mat when the replacement is only decorative. Record dimensions in centimeters and inches to avoid confusing similar US and European product sizes.
