Rug Underlays for the Exact Floor and Combined Rug Thickness

Check floor compatibility, trimming permission and door clearance before adding a pad beneath a rug.

A rug underlay changes the contact between a rug and the floor and can add thickness to the complete arrangement. It should be chosen with both products' care guidance, not as a universal fix for every moving edge. Begin with the actual floor finish, rug dimensions and door routes, then compare the exact underlay's supported use.

Read both floor and rug requirements

IKEA's STOPP FILT product information provides specific underlay materials, sizes and care guidance. Compare those statements with the floor manufacturer's requirements, including any conditions related to finish, moisture or heating. A product's broad floor claim should not override a particular floor warranty or care restriction. Read the rug's instructions as well, especially for an existing backing. Do not assume that layering an underlay under any rug automatically creates a supported or stable system.

Choose the supported size and edge arrangement

Measure the rug itself rather than relying solely on its label, then read whether and how the underlay may be cut or combined. Any recommended inset belongs to the product instructions; this guide does not invent a universal border distance. An underlay protruding beyond the rug can create an undesirable exposed edge. Smaller separate pieces may be permitted for one model and inappropriate for another. Keep the intended flat arrangement clear, without folding excess material under the rug to force a size match.

Measure combined thickness and nearby movement

Add rug and underlay thickness when checking doors, sliding furniture and other relevant clearances. A door that already brushes the rug may no longer move normally after padding is added. Read any floor-heating restrictions and permitted placement from both the heating or floor system and the underlay maker. A thicker pad is not automatically better for every installation. This guide does not claim tested slip resistance, sound reduction or a medical comfort benefit from a particular thickness or material.

Plan cleaning and inspection

Read whether the underlay can be washed, how it dries and any conditions for replacing it beneath the rug. The floor and rug may need separate care processes. Keep the model and material reference with the room's floor-care notes so future cleaning does not use an incompatible product. Buy when a documented compatible underlay addresses a real rug-placement requirement. Skip it when floor compatibility remains unresolved, when added thickness obstructs a door, or when an existing supported rug-and-pad arrangement already works. Consider changing rug placement instead of assuming another layer is always the answer.
